LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Wisconsin’s hunting community is buzzing with excitement as today marks the highly anticipated Gun Deer Opener, an annual tradition that draws hunters from across the state.
The Gun Deer Opener is not just a sporting event; it is deeply ingrained in Wisconsin’s culture. Many families see it as a time to come together, passing down hunting traditions from one generation to the next.
Local businesses also benefit from the influx of hunters, with stores stocking up on hunting gear, ammunition, and outdoor supplies.
Officials at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are reminding hunters to review safety guidelines, wear blaze orange, and practice firearm safety at all times.
” It’s Super important to always follow and practice the four main rules of firearm safety otherwise known as T-A-B-K”, says Michael Wever, hunter education administrative warden with the WI DNR. “The ‘T’ is treat every firearm as if it were loaded. ‘A’ is always point the muzzle in a safe direction. ‘B’ Be sure of your target, what’s before it, and what’s behind it. And the ‘K’ is keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you’re ready to shoot.”
As the hunting season progresses, the state anticipates continued engagement from hunters, both old and new, who seek not just a trophy, but an enduring connection with Wisconsin’s rich outdoor heritage.
